TV & Film Language: Lighting
TASK ONE:
a.) The image is shot with a low key lighting with a focus of filler light and back light, highlighting key features of the actor whilst also making an enigma code due to the mysterious suspense created by the lighting since some parts of the image are hidden in darkness- perhaps reflects the character?
b.) Shot with low key lighting again, no lighting other than top lighting, however the light comes from under that actors face, casting shadows over her face and making her seem somewhat scary, perhaps this image was taken from media apart of the horror genre.
c.) High-key lighting, filler(?), top and back light all used to make the actor the centre of attention for the audience. Shadows are cast over the actors eyes, making him look tough, serious and angry (?).
d.) Low-key lighting used with top light which mainly points to the characters face along with back lighting which separates the character from the background. The light is also shone onto the prop the character holds, a gun, which creates an action code filled with suspense for the audience.
e.) High-key lighting used with all filler, back(?) and top lighting used which highlights the actors look of surprise and fear as she screams, creating an enigma code of what is she screaming at?
f.) Low-key lighting with top(?) light coming through the blinds behind the characters. Filler light used which smoothness the characters appearances. All this done to show the audience that this is a calm, romantic scene.
g.) Low-key lighting, there is a big contrast between the bright back light which causes a black silhouette of actors to be shows instead of being able to see each of their faces. Perhaps this also builds an enigma code to who these people are?
h.) Low-key lighting since, once again, harsh contrast between light and dark lighting in image. No back lighting used but a top and filler lighting is used to highlight nothing but the actors face and a bit of the top part of her torso. Lighting highlights her shocked/ offended/ scared face creating an enigma code of what is she looking at which caused this reaction?
i.) High key lighting, using back and top to highlight all parts of the actor. However under her neck is shaded which tells me that filler lighting is not being used(?).
j.) Low-key lighting used to create fear and an enigma code of suspense due to the mysterious tone of the image. Perhaps only filler lighting was used to only highlight the characters body, making the audience focus on them.
k.) High-key lighting with back, filler and top lighting used to highlight the actors. Highlighting their peaceful and happy emotions making the tone of the image peaceful and calm.
TASK 2:
Film Noir
- low-key lighting: big contrasts between light and shadows used throughout 1950's film noir.
- chiaroscuro: created a dramatic contrast between light and dark.
- hard lighting: creates harsh shadows and adds to the dramatic effects
- back/top/filler lighting and low angled lighting also adds to the dramatic and suspenseful tone of the genre
TASK 3:
Film clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZUaGkr2dwk
Low-key lighting used throughout the entirety of the scenes with a focus of top lighting and a small amount of back lighting to separate the character from the setting, making them stand out more. Harsh contrast between light and dark lighting, creating enigma codes, When character pulls out prop, a gun, a contrast between the white background and the black gun creates an action code. At 1.14, character turns off a desk lamp, leaving there nothing to be seen but the silhouette of the character holding the gun prop, further pushing the enigma code.
