TV: Introduction to TV Drama
.) To my own definition a serial television drama is a TV series that runs throughout a prolonged period of time whilst aligning itself to the drama genre.
.) Doctor Who, Hill Street Blues, Dallas, Knots Landing, Starsky and Hutch
.) Police Producible (crime) (e.g 24 hours in police custody) , medical (e.g House), Period (costume) (e.g. Bridgerton) , science-fiction/fantasy (e.g Dallas), family (e.g. Friends) and teen (e.g. Young Sheldon).
.) Serial dramas play out in a voted or communal location inhabited by the ensemble cast of characters. For example in police serials, this is literally a police precinct (like the Miami Metro Police Department in Dexter).
.) Serial characters not only drive the plot but are also central to the actual series itself, audiences could perhaps gain empathy for the character due to how much we know about them or even relate to the characters struggles. This would mean that the character is what anchors the audience to watch more of the series.
.) A multi-strand narrative is a series which follow many different narratives, meaning there and multiple different perspectives through different protagonists e.g. Friends).
.) A cold opening into a series is when audiences are put directly into a scene of action instead of having a built up peak of action.
.) Yes I believe that Todorov's theory is equilibrium can be applied to TV drama series since it does follow the same form of equilibrium that Todorov has configured.
.) A typical form of TV drama is: an introduction to an issue, build it up peak, resolution of issue.
.) Subscription based channels like Netflix have made it possible for audience members to watch drama series whenever and wherever they deem fit, these platforms are also responsible for the term"binge watching" due to the capability to next episodes as soon as possible instead of having to wait for the next episode of something to air.
.) Criminal Minds: The setting is a FBI behavioural Analysis Unit in Virginia. The series follow both professional and personal lives of a team of FBI profilers (meaning the series is multi stranded). The narrative Procedural format, but focus on profiling the unknown criminal rather than the crime itself. Each episode is 42 minutes long and the distributors are CBS Television.
.) TV dramas as a genre may in the future develop into more detective like and true crime resembling series due to its current large market for it.
